Family Fun Connections: A Bird Checklist for Young Birders

Just in time for summer vacation, we’ve added a new resource to our Birding in Maine page: The Maine Birds Checklist for Young Birders (pdf). This photographic checklist features forty common species and includes extra information about each bird’s behavior and diet, making it a useful tool both as a checklist and for introducing ecological concepts.

Know anyone who is just starting to watch birds? Or are you hoping to get your children interested in birding? We’ve added a new resource to our Birding in Maine page, just in time for summer vacation: The Maine Birds Checklist for Young Birders (PDF). Each of the four pages has ten common birds, with a photo, short description and information about each bird’s behavior and diet, with 40 birds in all. There’s also a master checklist so you can record when and where you saw the bird and add any notes, making it a useful tool both as a checklist and for introducing ecological concepts. Download and print the checklist and start looking!

Pair your checklist with a field guide and/or the Merlin Bird ID app, and you’ll be ready to start checking those boxes and find your Top 40. Happy birding!
