In Loving Memory: Dori Barnes

On May 1, Maine Audubon’s Director of Finance and Human Resources, Dorothy (Dori) H. Barnes (May 4, 1966–May 1, 2020)–our passionate, hard-working, larger-than-life, fierce, loyal friend–left this world way too soon. Dori always spoke the truth and she kept us honest. Generous and inclusive, she valued family and love and laughter and friendship. She was proud of her Passamaquoddy roots and devoted to her family. Her grandchildren were always cherished visitors to Gilsland Farm.

She leaves behind a considerable legacy at Maine Audubon. She liked to say “I’m a numbers gal” as if that were her only strength, but in addition to being an exceptional “numbers gal,” she was also an incredibly kind and caring human resource director, and she kept the mission of the organization front and center when thinking about how to balance our financial situation with our programs. She created new and efficient systems, gave us regular and accurate monthly statements, crafted detailed spreadsheets, prepared multiple versions of each budget to present to the board, managed our bi-weekly timesheets and payroll, and much, much more. As a result of her strong work ethic, honesty and decency, caring and charismatic personality, she earned the respect and trust of everyone–both staff and Board.

Our thoughts are with her extended family in these unbearably difficult times. We will be turning to nature for solace and strength, and know that Dori’s spirit can be found in the warming sun and sheltering sky. We miss her every single day. Tahu, Dori.
