“Why I support Maine Audubon on #GivingTuesday”

Today is #GivingTuesday. Throughout the day, we’ll be sharing a few perspectives on Maine Audubon from members of our community.

One of them is nine-year old Ivy, who attended Maine Audubon camp this summer.

In a handwritten note she shared with us afterward, Ivy talked about how much fun she had at camp, and all she learned about nature. As screens and technology become increasingly present in kids’ lives, opportunities like those provided by Maine Audubon camps to get outside and learn to understand and appreciate nature have never been more important.

With your gift to Maine Audubon on #GivingTuesday, you can help us ensure that more kids can learn to love and protect Maine’s wildlife and habitat.

We’ll also hear from Zac, a seasonal biologist who works with Maine Audubon as part of our Coastal Birds Project.

Zac grew up close to the beach, and exploring coastal areas as a child helped inspire him to get involved with our work protecting this vital nesting and feeding habitat for endangered shorebirds like the Piping Plover and Least Tern.

“When I am working with a landowner or a beachgoer who realizes for the first time that they are sharing sand with a week-old Piping Plover,” Zac says, “it’s an incredible moment.”

Your #GivingTuesday gift will help ensure there are many more of these important moments ahead.

Susan Gilpin, volunteer and supporterFinally, we’re sharing the story of Maine Audubon supervolunteer and supporter Susan Gilpin.

Susan is a regular on our staff naturalist’s Thursday morning bird walks. She has also gotten to know our wildlife biologists. “I have seen the respect they have earned from Maine’s conservation community,” she says. “So when they say that a particular policy would be good for Maine, I pass that information along to my representatives in Augusta and Washington.”

Susan explains: “For me, it is not enough to enjoy nature. I want to help protect wildlife for future generations. Maine Audubon keeps me informed so I can advocate responsibly. After all, if we don’t speak up for Maine’s wildlife, who will?”

Your #GivingTuesday gift to Maine Audubon helps ensure we can continue our important wildlife conservation, education, and advocacy work.

On behalf of Maine’s wildlife and habitat, thank you for considering a gift to Maine Audubon this #GivingTuesday.
