Hamilton Audubon Sanctuary in West Bath has received a lot of stewardship attention as of late!
One major upgrade is a new boardwalk. Cole Epstein, Maine Audubon Seasonal Stewardship and Grounds Assistant, and I worked hard to haul a lot of timber into place for the construction of a 140-foot-long boardwalk. The area originally had a series of primitive bog bridges, but because the section of trail takes visitors through a forested wetland, it felt like the right move to transition away from low, unsteady bog bridges, to a boardwalk that will allow for safer passage and help protect the resource more effectively.
Now, several weeks later, that structure is finally complete and open to the public! I give most of the credit for this project to Cole. He has spent countless mornings and afternoons working on the turns for this structure, and I couldn’t be more proud about how it came out. It’s truly a thing of beauty.
