February Fun at Fields Pond in Holden!

Embrace winter this February with a host of outdoor programs fun for the whole family at the Fields Pond Audubon Center in Holden. Just seven miles southeast of Bangor, we’ve got a Nature Center, a 191-acre pond, and a 229-acre sanctuary with trails winding through field, wetland, forest, and lakeshore.

In winter, the trails are ideal for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, walking, and wildlife-watching, and the pond is great for skating (weather permitting!). Trails are open to all, for free, from dawn to dusk.

On February 12, at 9 am, join Maine Audubon staff for an easy two-hour Who Goes There? Outdoor Tracking Walk around the sanctuary looking for evidence of winter critters in the landscape. We will look for signs big and small – ranging from tracks in the snow (hopefully) to evidence of animals feeding. The walk will be easy – often when there is much to see, we actually don’t get very far at all! Space is limited and pre-registration is required. (Members $12, Nonmembers $15)

If you’re more of a night owl, join us for a peaceful winter’s night hike under the full moon on February 18 at 6:30 pm. These special Moonlight Snowshoe Hikes are limited in group size and a  limited number of snowshoes are available by advance reservation only (additional $2 fee).  Please call 207-989-2591 to reserve. ($7 Members, $10 Nonmembers)

For little ones, what could be more fun than an outdoor storytime!? Every Wednesday (except February 23), our educators lead a Read and Ramble, an interactive storytime in the outdoors, geared towards children ages 2-5 and their grown-ups. After the story time, we set you up with a related, self-guided activity to enjoy on the trails. We encourage each family to “ramble” at a pace and for a length of time that feels comfortable. The Visitor Center will be open beginning at 10 am for those who wish to warm up, use the restroom, or shop in the Nature Store.
Cost per child: $5/member, $7/nonmember (siblings under 2 are free)
2 sessions weekly on Wednesdays, 10-10:30 am OR 11-11:30 am
Registration required. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

We look forward to seeing you at the sanctuary and are ready to help you enjoy this wintry weather!
