Wherever a road crosses a stream, a bridge or culvert makes that crossing possible. If the crossing is incorrectly sized, poorly placed, or damaged, it can prevent fish and wildlife from reaching important areas for their survival, and can damage the surrounding habitats. Poorly functioning crossings also put roads at risk from the larger and more frequent storms occurring now. By replacing poorly functioning crossings with Stream Smart or CoastWise crossings we can restore the natural ecosystem, reconnect fish and wildlife habitat, and protect our infrastructure.
Stream Smart works with contractors, landowners, and other professionals responsible for road-stream crossings to construct culverts that maintain fish and wildlife habitat while protecting roads and public safety. Find out more here >
CoastWise is a training program and resource for anyone with responsibility for planning and building road crossings in tidal wetland areas. Modeled after the statewide Stream Smart program for non-tidal crossings, CoastWise supports coastal Maine communities in building safe road crossings that accommodate the tides, sea level rise, and increasingly powerful storm surge, while fostering a healthy ecosystem.
