See you later, summer campers!

Back-to-school sales seem to have started in July this year, so we’ll have to look for a few other signs that summer is winding down: goldenrod blooming everywhere, cooler mornings, and woodchucks munching on a few early windfall apples. At Maine Audubon, that of course means the end of our summer camp season. But before we tuck away our camp tees and walkie talkies, we wanted to revisit some highlights.

This summer was full of play and hands-on learning as our campers explored the ponds, meadows, marshes, streams, and forests of Gilsland Farm and Fields Pond, getting to know, differentiate between, and care for these habitats and their inhabitants. We’re grateful to these special places, the plants and animal friends that call them home, and to the staff, teen volunteers, and special guests who worked with our campers this summer.

Fields Pond Audubon Center Summer Camp 2025

2025 marked an exciting growth year for Fields Pond Audubon Center summer camps! Thanks in large part to the new camp pavilion, built by students in the construction engineering technology program at the University of Maine at Orono, we were able to double our offerings. We increased summer camp enrollment this year by 63% (in 2024 we had 50 spots, and in 2025 we had 85 spots) and we also tripled our scholarship awards this summer (in 2024, we awarded 5 scholarships and in 2025, awarded 15 scholarships to campers). Maine Audubon is actively fundraising for the same level of camp capacity expansion in greater Portland.
