The weather has been warming up and that means people have been out paddling boats around Scarborough Marsh! After what seemed like never-ending rainy Saturdays in May and June, we’re turning the page to sunny skies and busy days. We’ve had visitors already from 33 of the 50 states and from all over the world visit the center so far this summer! Our seasonal team of retail associates, canoe and kayak assistants, education interns, and wonderful volunteers have been hard at work running our nature store, sending boats out to paddle the marsh, and answering copious questions about birds, what to explore around Southern Maine, and where to get the best lobster roll in town.
We have started our 10 am guided canoe tours for the summer and filled our first three consecutive tours for our June dates. We have plenty more tours ahead for the months of July and August. These tours are first come first served, and offer a great opportunity to be out on the marsh and learn about what makes it such a beneficial and productive habitat for animals and plants.
Full moon canoe tours are nearly sold out with the exception of a few spots available on July 8 and August 6,7,8. If you are interested in attending one of our specialty paddles, now is the time to pre-register!
The center will be open from 9 am to 5:30 pm on July 4 and we will have lots of arts and crafts, games, door prizes, and educational posters. Come bring your friends and family out for a paddle or explore the salt marsh on the Nature Trail across the street.
Throughout the summer, I’ll be sharing more about events happening at the marsh, you’ll hear from our interns and staff, and we’ll share information about a few well known salt marsh birds and animals that call this special habitat home.
