New “EcoExplorers” Afterschool Program Inspires Young Naturalists at Fields Pond

EcoExplorers at Fields PondWe’re thrilled to share the launch of our new afterschool program, EcoExplorers, designed especially for curious young naturalists in 2nd through 5th grade! Turning our 229-acre sanctuary into an environmental laboratory, this hands-on program combines outdoor adventure with scientific discovery to help students connect more deeply with the natural world around them.

Each week, students meet for guided hikes, interactive nature-based experiments, and environmental exploration. From participating in monarch butterfly migration community science with Monarch Watch, to studying the magic of changing fall leaves through chromatography, our young naturalists are diving into topics that bring science to life. They’ve also rolled up their sleeves to learn about habitat restoration and the important role they can play in protecting local ecosystems while helping implement Fields Pond’s native plant demonstration garden.

EcoExplorers at Fields PondThe word seems to be spreading about this new opportunity as our group has grown from 8 students to 14 in just the first three weeks of the program! The excitement we see in our students—whether they’re flipping over logs to find insects or watching leaves change color before their eyes—reminds us why outdoor education matters. We can’t wait to see where the next season of discovery takes us!

The six-week fall session runs every other Monday, 3:35-4:45 pm, from September 8 through October 20, and plans are underway for a winter and spring session. There are drop-in spots available for the October sessions! Please call the center at (207) 989-2591 to register.
