We’re very excited to be welcoming some special guests for talks in the Visitor Center at this year’s festival:

🌱 12–12:50 pm Native Plants for Pollinator Gardens – Eric Doucette
🌱 1–1:50 pm Intelligent Tinkering: Boosting Biodiversity at Home – Deborah Perkins
🌱 2–2:50 pm Plant This, Not That – Gary Fish

Eric Doucette, State Botanist for the Maine Natural Areas Program and president of the Josselyn Botanical Society, will present “Native Plants for Pollinator Gardens.” Eric will focus on regionally appropriate perennials and shrubs to attract and sustain native pollinators.

Deborah Perkins is a wildlife ecologist with over 30 years of experience and a lifelong commitment to wildlife conservation. Before settling down in her native state of Maine, Deb was a roving field biologist for many years, conducting fieldwork and wildlife research throughout North America in a wide range of habitats (from the deserts of New Mexico to the remote tundra landscape of the Canadian Arctic). Gain a deeper understanding of what biodiversity really means – in the ecological context of your garden, backyard, and beyond; learn how to protect and improve biodiversity for a more resilient landscape in the face of climate change and other environmental stressors; and discover ways to “intelligently tinker” in your own landscape to meaningfully help struggling wildlife populations like native bees and songbirds.

Gary Fish is the State Horticulturist at the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. He is a past coordinator of the Maine YardScaping Partnership and manager of the Pesticide Control Board. He has a B.S. in Forest and Wildlife Management from the University of Maine, College of Forest Resources and has been a licensed professional forester since 1985. Gary’s presentation, “Plant This, Not That,” will provide an opportunity to learn all about invasive plants & what native plants to replace them with.

We will be joined by a handful of our friends and partners who will be tabling and offering retail items at the event. Partners include:
Wild Seed Project
Maine Cooperative Extension
Falmouth Land Trust
Portland Parks Conservancy
Longfellow Garden Club
