We’ve got outdoor and indoor options for you this Earth Day, so you could do one or the other, or both. We recommend both!
TAKE OUT: If you’re in the southern Maine area, please consider helping clean up the Scarborough Marsh area. Out of concern for public health and safety, we will not be having our usual Earth Day group clean-up this year. Instead, we’re asking people to help clean up the marsh on their own schedule. Starting April 19, we will have gloves and bags available for you to pick up at the Nature Center if you need them. Collect trash, tie the bags up well, and put them in the designated area at the Nature Center between April 26 and May 2. The Department of Public Works will pick up bags of trash at the Nature Center on May 3. Make sure to be safe when you are picking up trash near all roads and do not pick up any questionable items. PLEASE DO NOT PICK UP TRASH ON ROUTE ONE. The Scarborough Public Works will be working with people who have been trained to do it. (In previous years, as in the photo above, the road is partially blocked for safety.) If you have any questions about the clean-up, please contact Linda Woodard at firstname.lastname@example.org. Send in pictures, stories, and bag totals to email@example.com or post on our Scarborough Marsh Facebook page.
Our organized clean-up is a joint project that includes the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center, Friends of Scarborough Marsh, Eastern Trail Alliance, and the Town of Scarborough, with a special thank you to the Public Works Department.
TUCK IN: After a day spent cleaning up the Earth, spend the evening watching a curated selection of short films. Maine Outdoor Film Festival presents the 8th annual special conservation-themed version of the popular film tour. Join us for a curated selection of short independent films featuring the outdoors, a special raffle, and an evening celebration of Earth Day. There’s something for everyone: hummingbirds; paddling the Maine Island Trail; sustainable surf craft and three-wheeled solar machines; and much much more.
