Speak Up Against Weak Mining Rules

Prevent the development of dangerous mines near some of Maine’s most treasured places by urging the Environment and Natural Resources Committee to oppose weak mining rules.

The Environment and Natural Resources Committee has spent much of this session reviewing the bad mining rules from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) that did not protect Maine’s clean water and wildlife and that the Legislature overwhelmingly rejected last year.

Although the committee has made some improvements to the rules, the rules aren’t strong enough.  Unfortunately, the rules are still missing essential components to make them sufficiently protective. Go to our website to see the key problems with the mining rules.

Help Free Land for Maine’s Future Bonds

Encourage the State and Local Government Committee to support LD 1378, the proposal to eliminate the Governor’s role in releasing bonds after the voters have approved them at the ballot.

LD 1378, sponsored by Sen. Roger Katz, would curtail the Governor’s ability to withhold voter-approved bonds and require the State Treasurer to borrow all outstanding Land for Maine Future bonds, the $6.47 million approved in 2010 and $5 million in 2012.

The governor has refused to release voter approved Land for Maine’s Future Bonds until the Legislature approves his plan to increase timber harvesting on public lands and redirects the revenue to a program that supports heating assistance for low income residents. Go to our website to see the key talking points.
