Feathers & Feeders: Backyard Bird Photography for Beginners at Fields Pond
Feathers & Feeders: Backyard Bird Photography for Beginners at Fields Pond
Spring Migration Edition
Join nature photographer and Registered Maine Guide L’aura Bradford and discover the joy of bird photography in this hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop. Limited to just six participants, this small-group session offers personalized instruction while photographing birds at the Fields Pond Audubon Center feeders. You’ll learn about lens choice, camera settings, focusing techniques, composition, and how to capture birds both perched and in flight. We’ll also cover how to set up natural-looking perches, attract birds ethically, and develop fieldcraft skills for better photos. Throughout the class, we’ll emphasize responsible practices for
photographing birds at home and in the field.
Required Equipment
Long lens: A 200mm or longer lens is recommended to maintain a respectful distance from the birds.
Tripod (optional): Helpful to give arms a break but not required.
Chair (optional): We’ll be sitting quietly near feeders—bring a chair for comfort and stillness if you’d like.
Clothing: Dress in layers and bring gloves if you feel you’ll need them. Also clothes you don’t mind getting dirty if you want to take advantage of shooting from the ground. Bring your camera, your curiosity, and a love for feathered visitors!
