Birdability – Accessible Birding Outing in Portland
Date: Wednesday, 22 October 2025
Time: 8-10 am
Location: Back Cove, Portland – meet at the Back Cove Trail Parking Lot, here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/
Due to rain and strong winds predicted for Wednesday morning, our Accessible Birding outing at Back Cove has been cancelled. You’re invited to instead join us at The Proper Cup at 500 Forest Ave in Portland from 8-10am tomorrow to chat about birds and birding.
Join naturalists Doug Hitchcox and Stacia Brezinski for an accessible birding event at Back Cove, one of Portland’s best birding spots! Mid October is a great time to watch ducks and geese arriving for the winter, look for lingering sparrows, or start getting acquainted with the gulls that frequent this area. We’ll be set up during the incoming tide, hopefully letting it push birds in close to us.
During this event we plan on being stationary throughout our birding. We’ll bird near a few permanent benches (see location at map above) that are along the edge of the Back Cove trail, which is a 5+ wide path of compacted stone dust. More information on the accessibility of this area, and the rest of the trail can be found in this Maine Trail Finder blog post by Enock Glidden: https://www.mainetrailfinder.
We’ll have extra binoculars and monoculars on hand for anyone to borrow.
