Become a Shorebird Ambassador with Maine Audubon

Looking for a way to enjoy Maine’s beautiful coastline, engage with other people, and help our migrating shorebirds at the same time? Become a Shorebird Ambassador with Maine Audubon!

Shorebird Ambassadors walk the Maine shoreline during migratory shorebird season (July-October) to both monitor the birds and to share the birds’ stories with the general public. By raising public awareness of these resilient, far-flying birds, our hope is that people will be better equipped to give the birds the space they need to prepare for their long migratory flight. Shorebirds everywhere are in steep decline, and giving them the space they need during migration is one way we can help these impressive birds.

To help us with this mission, we are looking for folks with a positive attitude, an interest in learning the basics of shorebird ID and biology, a love of walking along the shore, and an enthusiasm for sharing information about and appreciation of migratory shorebirds with others. If this sounds like you, we would love to have you as a Shorebird Ambassador!

If you are interested in signing up to be a Shorebird Ambassador:

Please sign up for ONE virtual training and ONE on-beach training session
Virtual Training (Required; if you cannot attend, we will send you a recording)
Wednesday, July 23, 12 pm – Sign up here
Friday, July 31, 6pm – Sign up here
On-Beach Training (Recommended)
Monday, August 3, 9 am at Pine Point Beach, Scarborough – Sign up here
Thursday, August 7, 9 am at Wells Beach, Wells – Sign up here

• Through these trainings, we will give you:
• Training on basic shorebird ID and biology
• Training on how to interact with the public
• Ideas for sites to visit (some have free parking, while others do not or require a state
park pass)
• Outreach materials (stickers and postcards)
• Shorebird Ambassador Lanyard with phone numbers, shorebird basics, etc.

If you are unable to attend one of the virtual trainings, we will send you a recording of the online session for you to watch on your own time. If you are unable to attend either of the on-beach trainings, we will also be holding on-beach “office hours” at different beaches throughout the migration season, so there will be other opportunities to meet us on the beach!

Thank you for your time and for caring about the birds!
