Action Alert: Support Native Fish

Please contact your legislators today and ask that they support native fish, habitat connectivity, and sound science by supporting LD 922.

LD 922 would the allow the passage of anadromous (“sea-run”) fish such as Alewives, Blueback Herring, and Sea Lamprey into Sheepscot Pond in Palermo, an historic stronghold for these critical species.

What You Can Do

Call or write your legislators and share with them that, as their constituent, you support LD 922 because:

  • Alewives are an essential part of the food chain, feeding countless species of mammals, birds, and other fish.
  • Alewives support clean water by eating zooplankton and carrying the phosphorus that causes algae blooms out of lakes and ponds.
  • Restoring historic Alewife populations is key to bringing back Maine’s once prosperous ground-fishing industry; scientists have linked the disappearance of coastal cod stocks to the dramatic decline in Alewife population.

Alewives are a native species whose population has declined by over 95 percent on the east coast. Passage of LD 922 is significant step in the right direction toward restoring this species.

If you email your legislator, please let us know. You can add a comment below or email me at advocacy@maineaudubon.org. We’re working hard to make sure that all Maine Senators and Representatives receive these important messages, and we need your help.

Thank you for taking the time to speak up in support of Maine’s native fish.
