CoastWise Professional Workshop – Freeport

Join us for a two-day, field based CoastWise workshop for road professionals where we’ll share the CoastWise Approach to achieving ecological resilience and climate- ready road crossings in tidal environments. CoastWise is a training program and resource for anyone with responsibility for planning and building road crossings in tidal wetland areas. Modeled after the statewide Stream Smart program for non-tidal crossings, CoastWise supports coastal Maine communities in building safe road crossings that accommodate the tides, sea level rise, and increasingly powerful storm surge, while fostering a healthy ecosystem.

In this professional level workshop, we will share the principles of the CoastWise Approach, following the CoastWise manual and diving deep into the technical aspects of tidal crossing design including hydrology and hydraulics, crossing performance objectives and design criteria, construction, and more. This is a field-based workshop with a large portion of the time spent in the field on both days, so please dress accordingly including with at least knee-high rubber boots (hip boots or waders are ideal) for walking in the salt marsh. We will work in inclement weather, so please come prepared. Coffee and morning snacks as well as lunch will be provided on both days, and we will carpool to the field sites.
