Big Sit Bird Count

During the annual Big Sit!, people sit (or stand) inside a 17-foot (5.2-meter) circle and see how many birds they can identify in one day. This annual international semi-competitive birding event was originated by the New Haven Bird Club in 1992. It’s FREE and OPEN TO ALL!

The Big Sit! takes place annually in early October

2026: The Big Sit! starts Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 12 a.m. midnight and closes Sunday, October 11, at 11:59 p.m.

Maine Audubon is hosting a Big Sit! Accessible Birding event at Fields Pond Audubon Center this year, on Saturday, October 10, from 7 am to 4 pm.
Our goal: document the most birds possible at Fields Pond in one day, from one location. Bring a chair and a picnic lunch, and watch for birds with us! Co-sponsored by Penobscot Valley Audubon Chapter. Come for the day or visit for a few hours.
The event is free but registration is encouraged so we know you’re coming! Full details here >

We encourage you to visit the Big Sit! website and create or find a circle near you.
