  • Thursday Morning Bird & Nature Walks

    Join us each Thursday for an easy stroll through Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm Sanctuary.  We will walk the property primarily looking for birds but won’t ignore any other wildlife or plants. Bring your binoculars and dress to be comfortable outside for two hours. Our total walk is usually 1.8 miles but people can leave early if needed.

    We meet near the main parking lot. If you arrive late we are typically by the pond for the first 15-20 minutes before heading into the West Meadow.

    Walks will be at 7:00AM again beginning in April.

    Based on our popular program elsewhere, Maine Audubon invites families and caregivers with young children to join us weekly at Fields Pond Audubon Center.  Each one-hour session will feature guided activities and adventures designed to cultivate a love and understanding of our natural world.

    The program is geared towards children aged 2-5, but younger siblings are also welcome.

    No charge for siblings under age two
    Maximum of three children per adult

    Seven week session: Wednesdays, March 1 – April 5

    Advanced registration encouraged! Drop-ins are welcome if space is available.

    DEJUCome join the Nature Tuesday Group!  We will meet to explore the outdoors at Gilsland Farm and other locations. Adults with any level of knowledge are welcome… we will learn from each other.

    Walks are the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 1:30 – 3:00 PM and meet rain or shine.

    Join us for our annual spring live animal show at Gilsland Farm Audubon Center!

    Our friends at Center for Wildlife will bring furry and feathered guests to Gilsland Farm so that we can get a closer look at some of the wildlife we work to protect.

    The show takes place indoors and is easily accessible for all. Our live animal shows usually sell out, so register soon. Walk-ins welcome if space remains available.

    Please note:  This program entails a formal presentation involving live animals, and is most appropriate for school-aged children and older.  Guests are asked to remain still and quiet throughout the 45-minute presentation so as not to disrupt the animals and other people.  Thank you!

    As spring approaches it is time to clean up the marsh, the Nature Center, and the grounds for the new season. Join Maine Audubon, Friends of Scarborough Marsh, and the Scarborough community for a work day, and help make our corner of the earth a better place.  Bring a friend, your family or community group.

    This year we are partnering again with Project G.R.A.C.E in Scarborough to help not only the marsh, but the people of Scarborough. Support a neighbor by bringing canned and staple foods or grocery gift cards when you come for the clean-up.

    Photography offers endless opportunities and often new avenues to connect with nature. Join us at Fields Pond Audubon Center with our staff naturalist, Doug Hitchcox, for a workshop on nature photography to learn tips and techniques on how to take great photos of wildlife and the scenes you may find (or create). This two hour workshop will begin inside to cover essentials from shooting techniques, ethical practices, and basic photo editing before going outside to explore Fields Pond and test your newly learned skills.

  • Volunteer Naturalist Training – Scarborough Marsh

    Volunteers are needed to lead nature explorations Monday through Friday for groups of all ages at the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center.  No experience is needed, just a love of nature and a desire to share it with others. We provide training in marsh ecology and leading groups.

    Just in time for their spring arrival, our Staff Naturalist, Doug Hitchcox, will hold a workshop to teach you various techniques for identifying the gems of our forest: warblers. We will look at the diversity of the family, keys for identifying each species, and even spend time learning the songs and auditory cues to take your birding to the next level.

    This is a great opportunity to learn some of the birds we’ll be seeing on our free ‘Warbler Walks’ at Evergreen Cemetery and Capisic Pond Park from May 8th through the 19th.

  • Warbler Walks at Evergreen Cemetery

    Join us for our free walks during peak migration to see returning birds that are stopping by Portland’s parks either along their northern migration or as a potential nesting location. On Monday through Thursday we will bird Evergreen Cemetery. Last year we identified 111 species during these two weeks!

    We will meet near the pond in the back of the cemetery. Here is a map of our meeting place (park near marker “B”). The walk will continue if there is a light rain, but we will cancel if there is a steady downpour.

    Join us for our free walks during peak migration to see returning birds that are stopping by Portland’s parks either along their northern migration or as a potential nesting location. On Fridays during these ‘Warbler Walks’ we go birding at Capisic Pond which often holds unique species like Orchard Orioles, Warbling Vireos, and waterbirds like Wood Ducks and Virginia Rails.

  • Springfest at Fields Pond

    Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day with Fields Pond Audubon Center! Bring your favorite people, pack a snack and drop in for any or all of the day’s events. There will be lots to do and learn in a group or on your own. Activities include:
