Why is fall the best time to purchase native plants?
The soil is still warm. We’re seeing milder temperatures and more precipitation this month, yet the soil is still relatively warm. Roots will continue to develop until we get to freezing temperatures, making this a good time to set the foundation for next year’s gardens.
You can provide habitat and nectar for bees and butterflies. Fall asters and goldenrods also provide a crucial supply of late-season nectar for bees and other pollinators. Monarchs preparing for their long migration to Mexico need fuel now so make sure you’ve got them covered.
Your plants will require less water. With lower temperatures and shorter days, plants generally need less watering in the fall. Typically, you will not need to water your plants more than once per week until the soil freezes.
