About the Western Maine Chapter
The Western Maine Audubon
Society was formed in 1970 as a chapter of the National Audubon Society.
When the National Audubon Society and the Maine Audubon Society merged
in 2000, the Western Maine chapter became a chapter of Maine Audubon
Society
Chapter Mission
The mission of the Western
Maine Chapter of Maine Audubon is to educate and engage the people of
Western Maine, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats,
for the benefit of local communities and their natural environment.
Upcoming Programs and Events:
Bob Kimber's Canoe Trip
On Wed., Sept. 17th, Bob Kimber, a former WMAS board member will give a presentation on his latest north country canoe trip. He has given other such programs in the past and they have been well received. It will be held at the Roberts Center, room C23 on the University of Me. Farmington campus, at 7:00 P.M.
Other programs in the works are: Professor Chris Magri of U. Me. Farmington on the late Autumn sky - in Oct. in two parts; a presentation and a sighting at the U.M.F. observatory. That will also include our annual meeting.
In November, a speaker on the state's salmon restorative program.
Field Trips
Monhegan Island
Sept. 27 - 28
Monhegan Island, only 10 miles from the mainland, is a frequent stopover for migrating birds in the Fall. Unusual warblers, sparrows, and pelagic birds frequently turn up and the hiking is beautiful whether or not the birds show. Western Maine Audubon is planning a weekend of birding there the weekend of September 27-28. We plan to ferry over Saturday from New Harbor and stay over at the Trailing Yew Saturday night. For further information call Steve Bien 897-5215
Bluebird Booklet Available
Several years ago, the WMAS Chapter produced a booklet entitled Welcome Back Bluebirds, a simple and handy reference to attracting and housing Eastern Bluebirds and other cavity nesting species. Periodically we offer these booklets to WMAS members. With thoughts of spring on our minds and the imminent return of Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds to central and western Maine, this is a great time to once again make the booklets available. Also included in the booklet are simple instructions for nest box construction, for those who tend to be industrious in the workshop during the final weeks of winter.
Anyone interested in receiving an individual copy of Welcome Back Bluebirds may contact Wendy Howes at curiousbooks@verizon.net. Multiple copies to one address are available for a small postage charge.
