Explore Monhegan Island with Maine Audubon
MONHEGAN ISLAND, Maine, September 19, 2008—Maine Audubon is leading a daytrip to explore Monhegan Island, one of the state’s most beautiful places and a hotspot for migrating birds, on Wednesday, October 1, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
“The exciting thing about Monhegan Island is that you never know what to expect from day to day,” said Maine Audubon staff naturalist Eric Hynes of Portland, who is leading the trip. An important rest stop for migratory birds heading south in the fall, he said, this offshore island draws a range of species and many surprises.
The trip is timed to see migrating falcons, warblers, vireos, sparrows, and thrushes. But don’t be surprised to see uncommon birds such as lark sparrow, red-headed woodpecker and western tanager. The ferry trip to the island from New Harbor should also turn up a range of seabirds.
Maine Audubon staff naturalist Eric Hynes has conducted extensive fieldwork on raptors, migration, and neotropical migrant songbirds from Panama to the Pribilofs. He’s also been a tour guide, owl bander, and ground squirrel rustler.
The trip is $50 for Maine Audubon members and $60 for nonmembers. Please call (207) 781-2330, ext. 215, for more information or reservations.
