Audubon Centers & Sanctuaries

Maine Audubon operates one seasonal and two year-round Audubon centers plus eight additional sanctuaries and camps.

Our properties offer the public unmatched opportunities for learning, exploration and recreation in a variety of natural environments.

Centers

Audubon centers are full of diverse, hands-on educational resources for people of all ages, plus indoor and outdoor space for programs and events. You’ll find something different every day at an Audubon center, from a naturalist banding birds to a presentation with live owls, from a beekeeper collecting honey to kids on a guided nature walk. The centers are also home to Maine Audubon Nature Stores full of books, optic equipment, bird feeders and other nature products.

Sanctuaries

Maine Audubon sanctuaries are open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. Encompassing more than 3,000 acres statewide, they offer a variety of natural environments, from coastal headlands, islands and estuaries to inland forests and lakeshores.

All properties are managed as wildlife habitat and are used for environmental education and passive public recreation.

Camps & Retreats

Maine Audubon camps help people fall in love with nature. Children, adults and families come back year after year to the Audubon Camp at Hog Island for one-of-a-kind programs led by top naturalists and educators. The secluded, historic lodges of Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary are ideal for a retreat among old-growth spruce, crystalline ponds and sweeping views. At Maine Audubon’s popular day camps, children explore woods, wildlife, marshes and mudflats and enjoy nature-related games and crafts.

Stewardship

Our sanctuaries and centers are a tribute to the generosity, commitment and active involvement of private individuals, foundations and corporations.

You, too, can become a steward - from clearing trails and leading nature walks, to donating land and funding - and by doing your part to help protect wildlife and wildlife habitat.

To ensure an enjoyable visit for all as well as to protect wildlife and wildlife habitat:

Please,

  • stay on trails
  • carry out all litter

Please, NO:

  • pets
  • hunting, trapping, collecting
  • fires
  • camping
  • alcoholic beverages
  • off-road vehicles

Thank you!
