  • Thursday Morning Bird & Nature Walks

    Join us each Thursday for an easy stroll through Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm Sanctuary.  We will walk the property primarily looking for birds but won’t ignore any other wildlife or plants. Bring your binoculars and dress to be comfortable outside for two hours. Our total walk is usually 1.8 miles but people can leave early if needed.

    We meet near the main parking lot. If you arrive late we are typically by the pond for the first 15-20 minutes before heading into the West Meadow.

    Walks will be at 7:00AM again beginning in April.

    Based on our popular program elsewhere, Maine Audubon invites families and caregivers with young children to join us weekly at Fields Pond Audubon Center.  Each one-hour session will feature guided activities and adventures designed to cultivate a love and understanding of our natural world.

    The program is geared towards children aged 2-5, but younger siblings are also welcome.

    No charge for siblings under age two
    Maximum of three children per adult

    Seven week session: Wednesdays, March 1 – April 5

    Advanced registration encouraged! Drop-ins are welcome if space is available.

Each week will include both indoor activities and outdoor adventures designed to foster a connection to nature, encourage stewardship, and provide an introduction to group learning settings.

    • Spring Songs
    • Monarch Butterflies

    DEJUCome join the Nature Tuesday Group!  We will meet to explore the outdoors at Gilsland Farm and other locations. Adults with any level of knowledge are welcome… we will learn from each other.

    Walks are the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 1:30 – 3:00 PM and meet rain or shine.

  • Flying WILD and Bird Sleuth Educator Workshop

    Join us for this interactive workshop with two excellent bird oriented programs Flying WILD and Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s Bird Sleuth, and receive a FREE bird feeder for your classroom. This 4.5 hour workshop provides activities that teach people about birds and what they can do to help birds and their habitats.  Studying birds is an accessible and fun way to bring real science to students!

    two_girls_with_checklists_pointing-300x200The Flying WILD materials built on scientifically sound information, engaging learners in hands-on activities, and helping young people evaluate choices and make responsible decisions. While meeting the needs of the classroom teacher, Flying WILD: An Educator’s Guide to Celebrating Birds easily adapts to audiences in informal learning settings, such as after-school programs, nature centers, museums, youth organizations, and others. Flying WILD is a Wildlife Society’s Conservation Award winner.

    BirdSleuth aims to help educators build science skills while inspiring young people to connect to local habitats, explore biodiversity, and engage in citizen-science projects.  From making observations and asking questions to collecting data and publishing results, BirdSleuth provides educators with resources that engage youth in their own investigations!

    Workshop participants will receive Bird Sleuth information, a bird feeder and curriculum materials along with the activity guide, Flying WILD, An Educator’s Guides to Celebrating Birds which features:

    • 43 field-tested, hands-on, minds-on, nature based, ready-made lessons
    • Listed for each lesson is the content areas, vocabulary, special guests to invite, activity time, space requirements and materials.
    • Activities involves social, emotional, physical, language, and cognitive domains to help foster learning and development in all areas.
    • The guide’s many activities can be used to teach classroom lessons or to initiate service-learning projects that help birds and their habitats.

    We are looking for new and returning volunteers to lead nature explorations at Fields Pond on weekdays in the spring. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary. Volunteers will learn teaching techniques, some species identification and general wetland ecology. Please contact Cyndi Kuhn for more information and to RSVP.

  • Teacher Workshop: Bringing Nature Home with Native Plants and Pollinators

    Because our yards and gardens are essential parts of the terrestrial ecosystems that sustain humans and the life around us, it is essential that we keep them in working order.

    This workshop is intended for teachers, educators, land trust representatives, and other community leaders who intend to increase the population of native plant, bird, and pollinator species on their schoolyard, land trust, or other community landscape. We will deliver content related to how important these species are and provide strategies for engaging youth and other audiences in the process.

  • Growing Up WILD Educator Workshop

    This in-depth 5-hour workshop is designed to provide training for early childhood educators. Growing Up WILD is an education program that builds on children’s sense of wonder about nature and invites them to explore wildlife and the world around them. Through a wide range of activities and experiences, Growing Up WILD provides an early foundation for developing positive impressions about the natural world and lifelong social and academic skills.

    natural curiousGrowing Up WILD is a multi-award winning program having received the 2009 Family Choice Award and the 2011 Renewable Natural Resource Foundation Excellence in Journalism Award.

    Workshop participants will receive the activity guide, Growing Up WILD: Exploring Nature with Young Children, which:

    • Is written especially for early childhood educators of children ages 3-7.
    • Features 27 field-tested, hands-on, nature based, ready-made thematic units and over 400 experiences in a full color 11″x17″ activity guide.
    • Includes outdoor explorations, scientific inquiry, art projects, music and movement, conservation activities, reading and math connections and “Healthy Me” dovetailing with the Let’s Move Campaign
    • Involves social, emotional, physical, language, and cognitive domains to help foster learning and development in all areas.
    • Supports developmentally appropriate practice allowing children to learn at levels that are individually, socially, and culturally appropriate.
    • Is correlated to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Standards and the Head Start Domains

    Volunteers wanted for a Spring day of service at Fields Pond.  Individuals, families, and groups are all welcome for routine seasonal maintenance and upkeep of our trails, building and grounds.

    All tools and supplies will be provided. Bring your own lunch; snacks and sweets provided.

    Our writing journey at Fields Pond begins with meditative exercises to open our senses. We will explore the fields, forest, and shoreline for signs of animal life and the many ways our landscape is changing from winter to spring. Observation, writing, and drawing will be interspersed with group sharing and feedback. Ideas for continuing your journaling exercise onward through the changing seasons will be offered.     Children in grades K-5 are invited to register for our April Vacation Camp.  A new theme will be introduced each day through cooperative games, scientific examination and creative arts exploration at Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth.

    Our vacation camps are taught by highly trained and experienced environmental educators.

    Campers will learn about incredible journey of migration and see what birds are coming back to Maine.

    Learn about various Maine animals and their adaptations to attract a mate, defend their home and babies! Perform what they have learned!

     

    Wednesday 4/19: Home Sweet Home

    Campers will be able to create and discover various nests and shelters of Maine Audubon’s wildlife.

     

    Thursday 4/20: Spring Stewards

    Earth Day! Campers will create interpretive signs for their favorite spots on our Sanctuary to share with the public and spend time caring for the Earth in a stewardship project.

     

    Friday 4/21: Spring into Action!

    Live Animal Show! Many animals prepare for spring and summer in different ways.  We will take a trip to the pond to study the different things parents do from spring time to summer time!

Each day has its own theme, but daily activities tie into a week-long focus on habitats and stewardship.
