Brownfield Bog, in the Saco River’s floodplain, is a fascinating complex of small peatlands, ponds, maple swamps, and meandering watercourses that harbor some of Maine’s more uncommon breeding birds. The yellow-throated vireo and blue-gray gnatcatcher nest in the deciduous forest along the water’s edge; both cuckoo species, thrushes, and sapsuckers can be found in the surrounding forest. There is no better place to study the different songs and habits of both alder and willow flycatchers. Hooded mergansers and common goldeneye compete with the wood ducks for the nesting boxes posted around the wetland. Hidden among the reeds may be found least bittern, American bittern, Virginia rail, and sora, and we’re sure to hear and see Wilson’s snipe.
Price of the trip includes a ride up to Brownfield in a 15 passenger van. We will depart from Maine Audubon’s Gilsland Farm Center in Falmouth at 5:30 AM. Please arrive early so that we can leave on time.
