Conservation Candidates Forum

Learn how Maine’s congressional hopefuls stand on environmental issues at the 1st District Sustainability in Maine candidates forum from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, at the University of Southern Maine’s Glickman Library in Portland.

Republican candidate Charlie Summers and Democratic nominee Chellie Pingree will participate in the nonpartisan event hosted by Maine Public Radio’s Irwin Gratz. The forum will cover such topics as global warming, clean energy, land protection, and wildlife habitat.

Admission is free (e-mail info@trails.org) and the forum also will be broadcast on community television stations in more than 230 Maine cities and towns in October.

 

Take it Outside at the Governor’s Conference on Youth and the Natural World

Thursday, October 2, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Augusta Civic Center

Attention educators, parents, and students: Join a statewide discussion about getting kids into the outdoors and restoring a healthy balance in the lives of Maine’s children at the first Governor’s Conference on Youth and the Natural World.

Conference includes a climbing wall, outdoor film festival, and a full-day of panel discussion on topics that include:


• Connecting your family with the physical and mental benefits of spending time in nature
• Bringing nature into our schools
• Increasing recreational opportunities in Maine
• Creating places to reconnect with nature in towns and cities through creative planning
• The role of media in getting youth and families outdoors


Governor John Baldacci will kick of the conference and introduce keynote speaker Larry Seltzer of the National Forum on Children and Nature, who will address issues surrounding children’s increasing disconnection from nature.
